Veterinary Libraries Directory

Veterinary Medical and Related Libraries
An International Directory

ABOUT THE DIRECTORY

This Web-based Directory of veterinary medical and related libraries is based upon a Quicklist compiled for many years by the Veterinary Medical Libraries Section. Distributed internally only to participants, its primary purpose was to facilitate communication among veterinary libraries in the United States, Canada, and West Indies. Given the need for rapid contact information as well as expanding international cooperation and resource sharing, the Quicklist has been transferred to the World Wide Web. In addition, content had been expanded to include many libraries with significant veterinary collections around the world.

The Directory incorporates and supersedes library listings appearing on the “Veterinary Medicine Libraries” Web site maintained by Ken Ladd since 1995. Ken had initiated that site when he was veterinary medicine librarian at the University of Saskatchewan. In 2008, the Veterinary Medical Libraries Section of the Medical Library Association assumed responsibility for updating and maintaining the listing. Due to the extensive amount of effort involved in maintaining two listings, Ken’s site is being “retired” or replaced by this new directory.

Content editors and editorial board members include: Trenton Boyd (University of Missouri), Tara Tobin Cataldo (University of Florida), Vicki Croft (Washington State University), and Susanne Whitaker (Cornell University).

Among the libraries represented are:

  • Academic (university and/or branch) libraries serving colleges that grant D.V.M. or equivalent degrees

At the present time, coverage of related libraries is incomplete, especially outside the United States, but might include:

  • Academic (university and/or branch) libraries serving veterinary science departments that do not grant D.V.M. degrees

  • Zoological gardens and aquariums

  • Veterinary clinical hospitals

  • Animal alternatives and welfare centers

  • Veterinary professional organizations

  • Primate research centers

  • Animal health research institutes

  • Pharmaceutical companies

  • National and governmental libraries of medicine or agriculture
